Crowd finance and the iPhone 7 headphone controversy

October 05, 2016 • By TAB team

Earlier this month Apple announced its new iPhone 7 handset will not include a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, instead relying on Apple’s own Lightning Port and wireless technology.

This decision caused controversy amongst Apple fans, with some heralding it a bold move, whilst others were unhappy that their existing headphones had been rendered obsolete.

In response to this announcement, we noticed several crowd finance campaigns sprang up to offer solutions, ranging from separate adaptors to cases with built-in interfaces.

The demise of the headphone had been rumoured for some time prior to the launch, and 3 of the 8 crowd finance raises launched prior to the date of the announcement. The earliest, and the only campaign to close so far, was AuxMe in June 2016. In contrast to the other ‘early’ raises this campaign failed to gain any funding, suggesting its timing 3 months before the announcement may have played a factor in its lack of success.

Overall the campaigns in our sample seem to have met with limited success; out of the 8, only 2 have received any funding at the time of writing: World’s First BomDio ($505) and Amp.i.Am ($10,364).

The other 5 raises all stand at $0; however, with 5 campaigns due to close within the next 60 days, this could change substantially.
